Educational Policy Fellowship Program General Assembly Day

On Tuesday, May 7 I went with my Educational Policy Fellowship Program class to visit the General Assembly.  We sat in on many sessions and heard several guest speakers.  I learned so much this day!  I am very thankful to have had the opportunity for this experience!

West Greene Elementary

The afternoon of May 6th, I traveled to Greene County to speak with the staff at West Greene Elementary.  When I walked in I was met by the guidance counselor.  She showed me around and took me to her room to meet with 3 students.  The students asked me amazing questions! I had so much fun talking with them and learning about their school.

After school we met in the library.  I spoke about Global Education and shared some of the projects that my students have done.  Greene County as lots of technology so I was trying to give the teachers more ideas of what they could do with it.  They are a wonderful staff!  I really enjoyed having this opportunity!

North Drive Elementary School

On May 6th, I traveled to Wayne County and visited North Drive Elementary School.  As soon as I walked in I was greeted by 2 students.  One that was in 1st grade and one in 3rd grade.  They shook my hands and welcomed me to the school.  They then led me, their teacher, and their principal to the library.  Once we entered the library I saw that they had an entire display set up.  There were table cloths, food, 10 students K-5, and several teachers.  The students showed me through the buffet and then found their seats.  While we were eating I sat with several teachers of the year and we talked about educational issues including global education.  When we were finished the students were ready to ask me questions.  It was so cute! They did such a wonderful job and I could tell that they had practiced their questions!  After they had finished the title 1 teacher, NDES teacher of the year, presented me with 4 books.  He explained to me that he is an author and has had some children's books published.  He signed the books and told me they were to share with my students back at Bethel.  I was so excited!  Books for my students are a wonderful gift!  I was also presented with some flowers.

The students were then back in action and they were the tour guides.  They lined up and took me around the school and into each classroom.  There were 2 students leaders per grade.  They divided the grade levels in half and each student showed me 2 to 3 rooms before we dropped them off at their own school.  They were amazing!

When we started to get towards the end there were 2 wonderful 4th graders.  The one was wearing a suit and tie.  I told him he looked very nice today.  He said, "Well they told me that the best teacher in the state was coming so it thought... man... I better wear my best clothes for her!"  It was adorable!  When he took me into his classroom his class and teacher was rapping about math facts.  He joined in and taught me a couple of lyrics.  I loved it!

Scholastic News

I found out that the STOYs and the NTOY Jeff made the front page of Scholastic News.  I was so excited about this because I have been reading Scholastic News since I was in 3rd grade! This means so much!

NC Teacher of the Year Luncheon 2013-2014

On May 2nd I went to the State Board of Education meeting in the morning and the NC Teacher of the Year Luncheon in the afternoon.  I was excited that Joseph had the opportunity to come to both the SBE meeting and the luncheon.  It was a neat feeling to not be nervous this year, like I was last year!

When I got up and spoke about my year I showed many pictures from my travels.  I tried to focus on the things that I accomplished and did rather than on the things that I received.  It was a very strange feeling to stand up on stage and give my farewell speech.  In a way I feel like I just spoke my acceptance speech!

Click the link to look at my presentation and pictures! https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1DqcrUIc_xvaNtSDsTTfrFiVURXytUwYIpdrVazO6qgg/edit?usp=sharing

After I spoke they announced the new Teacher of the Year.  Which is... drum roll please... Karyn Dickerson from Guilford County!  I was so excited for her!  She teaches high school English at Grizzly High School.  She had a wonderful acceptance speech! I know she will do a wonderful job!

Pictures below!

NC Senators and Representatives

On May 1st I rushed around the General Assembly building meeting with NC Senators and Representatives to discuss the importance of Pre K and NCCAT.  It was a long day, but I was excited I stepped outside of my comfort zone, set up the meetings, and met with the Senators and Representatives.  Some of the meetings I had by myself while others I had with the NCCAT Director and a Board Member.  I hope our discusses helped.  I am very concerned with the direction NC is going.

Locust Elementary School

On the afternoon of April 30th, I traveled to Stanly County to visit Locust Elementary School.  As soon as I drove into the county I could tell how many businesses had moved out of the county in the last couple of years.  After I talked with the principal I realized how much it is affecting the school community.

Despite the movement of jobs, the school was wonderful! I met so many amazing and hard working teachers!  While I was in the 2nd grade classroom I watched chicks hatch from their eggs!  I was so excited I said a little too loud, "He's hatching!".  Before I knew it the entire 2nd grade was running up to look in the incubator.  It was so neat to be a part of the experience!
Chicks hatching!

Forest Park Elementary School

On Tuesday, April 30th I traveled to Cabarrus County to visit Forest Park Elementary School.  Forest Park is in the Kannapolis City School District.  I was excited to visit there to see the school, but also to see an old friend from college.  Meredith, who I went to school with and worked with at Fun in the Sun Summer Camp, is the new Instructional Technology Facilitator at Forest Park. Just from spending a couple of hours with Meredith I learned a lot about what I would be doing next year!

While I was there Meredith also gave me a tour of the school and let me observe teachers teaching.  I saw amazing things going on!  I watched students use ipads, laptops, clickers, and a mimioboard.  I had never heard of a mimioboard  before, but it takes a whiteboard makes it into an interactive board.  http://www.mimio.com/

I had such a great time and I learned so much from visiting Forest Park.  Thank you for letting me visit!

Greensboro College- Kappa Delta Pi

On Monday April 29th I left Boone and headed to Greensboro College.  I was still exhausted from the week before but I was excited to visit a college that I had never been to before.  Once I arrived, I realized how close the college was to downtown.  I had no idea! The campus was very pretty and even had a beautiful fountain in the middle of the campus.

I walked in and was greeted by students who were going to be inducted into the Greensboro College Kappa Delta Pi program.  They all looked very excited!  Once the program started you could tell how excited the college students' parents were.  You could see how proud they were through the smiles on the faces!  While I spoke I shared what animal my 3rd graders said I was when I was interviewed for Regional Teacher of the Year.  Afterwards I was presented with a pink shirt and zebra print that said Greensboro College.  The professor was so excited because I had shared that a student said I was a pink flamingo!

After the ceremony we went to a reception in another building.  I sat down and talked to a teacher and her student teacher.  I was wonderful to be able to talk with someone who was on the same page as me.

I had such a wonderful experience!

Washington DC- Day 5

On Day 5 we went down for breakfast and couldn't believe it was the last day!  We were all very tired, but still so excited from the week that we had had!  After a wonderful breakfast that was sponsored by the University of Phoenix the STOYs headed out to the US Department of Education to meet with Arnie Duncan, his staff, and the ED Teaching Fellows Program.

Once we were there we were divided up into groups and discussed the RESPECT document, issues, and shared ideas.  It was really neat to be asked from the US Department of ED on our opinions.  I was excited to share my opinion and to listen to my amazing colleagues.  There was so much knowledge in that room!

Afterwards we boarded up the bus and headed back to the hotel.  We had such a wonderful time and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to spend a week in Washington DC with Joseph and all of the State Teachers of the Year!

Washington DC- Day 4

So, I woke up on the 4th day in Washington DC and thought was yesterday even real??  I still couldn't believe that we were at THE White House and met THE President.  Crazy!

Target sponsored our breakfast in the morning and then the STOYs were off to SMART Technologies for our professional development day!  I was very excited to see the DC SMART headquarters!  We arrived and had the opportunity to play with many different SMART Boards, SMART Tables, and even a SMART projector that worked just like a SMART Board only there was not a board!  It was awesome!

After the full day at SMART Technologies we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the Black Tie Gala Reception and Dinner that was held at the US Institute of Peace.  We were a little rushed and started to stress that we wouldn't have enough to change.  But, of course we all made it!  It was so neat to be sitting on the Target Bus and have all of the other STOYs get on the bus in their gowns and tuxes.  We clean up nice!

We arrived at the US Institute of Peace and Josepha and I took pictures outside.  We went through security (which did not seem as high compared to the White House the day before!) and headed down the the white marble stairs to the reception below.  It was so pretty!  While we were walking down the steps people were there taking pictures of us.  It was so neat!  So neat in fact that Joseph and I walked back up the stairs to do it again!

Once we arrived at the reception we mingled in the beautiful  building until it was time to go down the next flight of stairs to the dinning area.  We found our seats and were excited to see that we were sitting with Suzanne and her husband from Alabama!  We also had 3 others guests at our table that worked for CCSSO and the PTA.  We talked before dinner started and found out that the guest of the lady from the PTA rides mountain bikes and is friends with many guys that Joseph races against.  Crazy small world!

The dinner and presentations began quickly afterwards.  We had wonderful speakers and wonderful food!  Half way through the mail a lady came up to me and asked if I was from North Carolina.  I said yes and she said from Bethel?  I looked at her and smiled and said yes.  She said my friends said I had to come over and meet you!  I looked at her and smiled wondering what friends.  She then said I grew up in Watauga!  Apparently she posted on facebook that she was at the gala, parents from Bethel who she is facebook friends with because she went to high school with them then wrote to her to come find me.  I couldn't believe all the connections!

We had such a wonderful time!

Washington DC- Day 3

Day 3 started with a breakfast buffet on the 2nd floor that was sponsored by ING and the opportunity to watch the new National Teacher of the Year our own Jeff Charbonneau on Good Morning America!  It was really neat watching Jeff! He did an amazing job!

After breakfast we had free time until it was time to leave for the White House so Joseph and I put on our running shoes, took the metro, and went for a run around the National Mall.  It was amazing! (And yes I know I keep using that word! I can't find words that describe this AMAZING experience!)  We took pictures while we were running with the Capitol and the Washington Monument in the background.  It was so much fun!

Afterwards we hurried back and started getting ready to meet the President and to go to the White House!  I will admit I was a little nervous!  I decided to wear my black suit and gold shirt to represent Appalachian!  When it was time I hurried down to the bus, realized I forgot my CCSSO pass, ran back to my room, and back to the bus so afraid they were going to leave me!  (Of course those of you that know me know I am always early so having to go back to my room really only made me on time. haha But I  was panicked!)

Our bus pulled out from the hotel and headed over the White House.  We were all giggley and nervous.  We arrived and went through 4 checkpoints before entering the White House.  One of which included a smell test from a dog.  We walked in and we started taking tons of pictures.  We walked down this long hallway and we stopped at almost every door to take pictures of the rooms.  I couldn't believe we were in THE White House! It was unbelievable!  We then walked out by the Rose Garden and stood against The White House to wait.  We discussed how we thought the Rose Garden would have been bigger and have more roses!  From there we went into the Roosevelt Room to wait.  Many of us then decided that we needed to use the restroom (because if you are at the White House then you have to use the restroom at THE White House!).  Some STOYs used the one in the hallway and then they took the rest of us downstairs to use the one down there.  We came back up to the Roosevelt Room and waited some more.  While in the Roosevelt Room we noticed that there was a Nobel Peace Prize hanging on the wall!

Once they were ready we went one by one (shortest to tallest) into the Oval Office (that was off of the Roosevelt Room) to meet President Barack Obama.  At this point I realized I hadn't come up with anything to say to him! I started to panic and decided it was too late to come up with something and that we would just see how it went.  The person before me went in and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest!  It was a total out of body experience!  It was then my turn and I walked into the Oval Office and up to President Barack Obama (and as I type this I just felt butterflies in my stomach!)  As I walked up to him I remember thinking hmm.. not as tall as I thought.  I then shook hands with him and I kept thinking "I am shaking hands with President Barack Obama!!!"  He then said so you are from North Carolina?  I said yes and told him that I live in Boone which is about 2 hours from Asheville.  He said, "We love Asheville!".  I told him I did too and that we visit there a lot.  The President then asked what I teach and I told him that I teach 3rd grade.  He told me that was one of his favorite grades when his daughters were in school.  He then thanked me for being a teacher.  We then turned and he put his arm around me for a picture.  I haven't seen the pictures yet, but I hope I was smiling at the camera.because all I kept thinking was THE President has his arm around me!!!!!  From there I walked out another side door to the Rose Garden where they announced me.  I then walked across the stage and stood in my place.  While standing there I found Joseph in the crowd!  I was so excited that he was able to be there too!  As soon I found my spot I realized that I would fail a test on the Oval Office because besides yellow walls, a fireplace, and windows that made the room really bright I had no idea what the room looked like!  I was too busy staring at President Obama!  I then made a mental reminder to google the Oval Office when I got back to the room!

Once we all arrived on stage President Obama came out with Jeff Charbonneau and Arnie Duncan to speak and announce the new National Teacher of the Year.  It was unbelievable standing there while President Obama was speaking.  It was also really neat to be able to see the proctors and see how often he went off script.  You can watch the video here: http://youtu.be/-zH3cgsdPQg

After President Obama spoke he then came and posed for a picture with us.  Once the picture was taken he continued standing in the middle talking with us.  I decided to shake his hand again so I stuck out my hand and said thank you.  He then shook my hand again.  I was so excited!  He then left and went back to his office.  I then stood on stage to find Joseph in the crowd.  We found each other and we started taking pictures.  It was a once in a lifetime experience and I still can't believe it happened!  Simply amazing!

Washington DC- Day 2

When I woke up on Day 2, I couldn't believe that yesterday was only a half a day in DC.  I felt like we packed everything into only a couple of hours that we could.  Which made me excited about what was to come the rest of the week!

Joseph and I went down for breakfast in the dinning room of the hotel.  People to People were the sponsors.  While we eat People to People discussed what they do for students and teachers in the US.  They also shared that because we are now STOYs if we would like to get involved with People to People and chaperone trips then we will be able to do this.  I was so excited about this because I have wanted to go on a trip with People to People since I was little!  When they announced this Joseph looked at me because he knew exactly what I was thinking.

After breakfast the STOYs loaded up in the buses to go to the Smithsonian and Joseph decided to head up to Maryland with his mountain bike. All of the STOYs started in the Smithsonian Castle.  We then were told which session we were going to attend for that day.  I was so excited to find out that I was going to be able to attend my first choice that was on orchids.  We divided up into groups and then headed to our museums.  The orchids exhibit was in the Museum of Natural History. As soon as we walked in the smell of the orchids took over the room.  We all looked at each other and said almost at the same time, "Do you smell that?".  It was amazing!

We then spent some time looking and taking pictures of all of the orchids.  There were hundreds of different types.  The 3 ladies who worked at the museum then taught us more about the orchids.  For example that vanilla is an orchid.  Who knew?  I had such a great time!

(insert pictures)

After we learned more about the orchids we then gave feedback to the museum staff about how more schools across the United States could get involved.  As a group we came up with a really neat idea of having a virtual garden for students.

Once finished all of the STOYs came back to the Smithsonian Castle for lunch and to listen to the guest speakers.  It was so neat to hear up about all of the different sessions that the STOYs participated in.  I wanted to do them all!  If only we had more time!

We then went straight from the Smithsonian Castle to the Vice President's Residence at the Naval Observatory .  I was so excited!  We pulled up and security got on the bus and checked all of our ids.  I couldn't believe we were in the driveway!  Really, while I am writing this I still can't believe!  We were all checked in and then went through a security checkpoint before we entered.  While we were waiting in line we were all taking pictures with the house in the background and next to the VP seal.  I took a ton of pictures!  We entered the Vice President Residence and Dr. Jill Biden welcomed us one by one by shaking our hands and thanking us for coming.  She then spoke to us and thanked us for being a teacher.  I then found out that SHE is a teacher!  Dr. Jill Biden teaches at a community college and is the first second lady to hold a paying job while her husband is in office.  She was so down to earth and it made so much sense once I found out she was a teacher!

From there we were able to walk around the house and have our pictures taken with Dr. Jill Biden.  They also had a reception set up for us that included potato chips, grilled cheese, and vegetables.  I remember thinking my 3rd graders will love that I am eating grilled cheese at the Vice President's house!

Afterwards Dr. Jill Biden showed us around the grounds including the pool, garden, and front yard.  A couple of us took pictures on the swing in the front yard and then we took a whole group picture. It was amazing!

Washington DC- Day 1

First off, I want to start this blog by saying that I can't believe it has been a month since I traveled to DC for the National and State Teacher of the Year Recognition Week.  Where has the time gone?  I also think if I am going to be totally honest I have been putting this blog to the side because the week was amazing and I know I can't do it justice just by blogging about it.  With that said here goes Day 1!

Joseph and I left Boone early Sunday morning to start the long drive to Washington DC.  We were so excited but I was also a little nervous.  For some reason in the back of my mind I was afraid that something was going to go wrong and that I wasn't really going to be able to meet the President...now I know that we actually were close to not being able to meet the President because of a Twitter hoax... but that is another story.

When we first arrived at the Ritz Carlton in Pentagon City, Joseph and I had no idea what to do.  We have never really experienced curb side check in and valet parking except at the Umstead for the NC TOY recognition day.  Joseph was driving and pulled up to  the front.  People who worked there came over to help and because I was a little stressed and confused I did what I should not have done and told Joseph I was going to check in and left him with the car and all of our stuff.  (We have now decided if its fight or flight... I choose the second option. haha) Joseph being the wonderful husband that he is took care of the car and met me inside.  Once we checked in I was so excited to see so many STOY friends!  It felt like a reunion!  Although we had only spent 1 week together in Arizona prior to  this trip, we have all stayed in touch through facebook.  So it felt like old friends!  Once we all introduced our spouses to everyone the Target bus pulled up to take us to the Newseum.  Joseph and I had still not made it to our room so we headed upstairs and told the group we would meet them over there by taking the taxi.

We went upstairs and the room  was so nice!  It was so exciting to know we would be staying at the Ritz Carlton for a week!  We quickly unpacked our things (including a goody bag from Target with a TOY Target T-shirt) and called a taxi to head over to the Newseum. The Newseum was so neat!  We had never been there before and it was so exciting to have this opportunity! I would recommend it to anyone visiting DC.  http://www.newseum.org/

After we had time to look around the Newseum  the STOYs and their guests headed up to the 8th floor for a reception and dinner.  It was so amazing!  All of the STOYs had on our Target shirts.  They had a reception set out and then we were able to eat outside.  The view was amazing!  You could see the Capitol Building right there!  It was a beautiful view!  It did end up being a little bit windy and cold, but we insisted on staying outside to take it all in.

After dinner we loaded up in the Target Buses that said "Teachers of the Year" on the side of the bus.  We then took a twilight tour of the monuments and memorials.  It was amazing how the monuments looked different at twilight then they did during the day.  (Joseph and I had taken a quick trip to DC in the fall with friends to visit.)  We had so much fun!  The Target people handed out glow sticks for us to wear so we could tell who was with our group as we were walking around.  The tour was amazing!  Thank you Target!

ASU Teaching Fellows Honors Day

I was so excited to be able to speak at ASU at their Teaching Fellows Honors Day.  I was also excited to see Whitney Blalock and so many of the other teaching fellows!  Whitney introduced me and it brought tears to my eyes.  While she was up on stage sharing stories about being in my classroom, I felt like I was a proud teacher looking at a past student.  Although Whitney wasn't my student she still worked in my classroom and I have had the opportunity to watch her grow.  She will be an amazing teacher!

While I spoke I talked about my students.  I shared my story about Lily asking if it is hard to be a teacher.  I also shared the wonderful animals that my students said I was when they were interviewed when I was up  for Regional TOY.  The lovely animals were: pink flamingo, monkey, cheetah, and a cuddly cat.

When I was finished I had a group of teaching fellows come over to me and tell me that they have been working at Bethel on a story telling project.  I was so excited!  Their picture is below.

Teacher Advisory Meeting

On April 10th I  helped co-chair our Teacher Advisory Meeting.  We discussed our District TOY Summit and looked at the messages from the teachers on "What We Believe".  They are very powerful messages that I can't wait to share with others.  Thank you teachers!

Person County Schools

Beginning Teachers Program
I traveled to Person County on Wednesday April 17th.  I arrived to Person County early (coming from Granville) and found a McDonalds where I could do some work.  As I pulled into the McDonalds I realized I was so tired. So instead of doing work inside the restaurant, I decided to take a nap in my car in the parking lot. haha  I have never done that before so I just wanted to share.

After my nap, I had the opportunity to speak to the Beginning Teachers of Person County.  I was impressed with the large number of beginning teachers and the eagerness that they had.  They were very excited to come together as a group and to ask me questions.  I had a wonderful time working with them and sharing some of the things that I have done with my class and Global Education.

Person County Teacher of the Year Banquet
After speaking to the Beginning Teachers I was invited to attend the County TOY banquet.  It was held at a very nice steak restaurant.  When I walked in I recognized one of the teachers standing at the door.  I introduced myself and found out that she was the current Person County TOY and she attended the District TOY Summit that we had the week before.  We sat together during dinner and I learned a lot from her.  I would like to see her teach because she sounds like an amazing teacher!

Once the program started I was very surprised to find myself getting teary eyed as they talked about the finalists.  I have never met these teachers before so I was shocked that I was so touched.  Each teacher had a story to tell and their stories touched me.  I also kept thinking about when I was sitting in their seats not too long ago.

Each teacher is amazing and is more than deserving for the title of county teacher of the year.  The winner is Joshua Frazier a PE teacher at Stories Creek Elementary. You can see the press release by clicking here: http://www.person.k12.nc.us/files/_nSKDm_/10e9cca14df8387d3745a49013852ec4/TOYJosh.pdf

Wilton Elementary School

On April 17, I traveled to Wilton Elementary School in Granville County.  I was again excited that I was going to spend another day with someone that I know!  The principal of Wilton is Lauren Allen who is in EPFP (Education Policy Fellowship Program) with me.  Once there Lauren gave me a tour of their school and then allowed me to participate in their Teaching Studies program.  This program happens 4 times a year and gives the teachers an opportunity to observe each other and then give feedback.  The day that I was there I worked with 2 different groups and observed 2 different teachers.  The group went in an observed a teacher for 15 minutes and then came back to the room.  The teacher that was being observed then came back to the room and was given feedback.  It was amazing how productive this was!  Everyone seemed to  really enjoy it.  I asked how they cover the classes for teachers to observe and I was told that everyone helps out.  Even the custodian.  I think this is a wonderful program.  I would love to observe teachers in my building and receive feedback!

Carver Elementary School

On the afternoon of April 16th I visited Carver Elementary School that is located in Vance County.  I arrived at the school earlier then I had planned so I sat in the parking lot looking at Twitter.  Suddenly I heard a knock on my window and saw Randy Oxendine (who I had met earlier that year at NCCAT).  I jumped out of the car and asked him what he was doing here!  He laughed and said that he was the PE teacher at this school.  I told him I had totally forgot that and that I was coming to visit.  I was so excited and I love when this happens!  I spend most of my time traveling across the state to schools and meetings where I don't recognize anyone, let alone know anyone.  So, I love when I see someone I know!  Especially when it is 5+ hours away from where I originally met them!

After briefly talking Randy took me into the school and introduced me to the principal. The principal gave me a tour of the school.  He showed me the cafeteria and explained to me that this is where the classes have PE when it is raining outside.  I looked at him and said...what?  He then explained to me that this elementary school does NOT have a gym.  He told me that Randy takes the students outside for PE but has to use the cafeteria when it is rainy.  I was shocked! I could not believe we have a school in NC that does not have a gym.  I also could not believe that even though I had spent a week with Randy at NCCAT he never complained.  He never once told me that he was a PE teacher at a school that did not have gym. I think this says a lot about Randy.  He is an outstanding teacher who cares about his students and is willing to do what it takes for them to be healthy and successful, despite the resources.  He is not one to complain (obviously) and instead looks at the best of every situation.  Randy and his students deserve a gym.  I am now trying to figure out how to help the students at Carver Elementary School because I can't imagine being a student and not having access to gym!

South Warren Elementary School

I traveled to Warren County on April 16th to visit South Warren Elementary School.  I had a great time walking around the school, popping into classrooms, and spending time with the 3rd grade class.  I was so impressed with the teachers willingness to go above and beyond despite the lack of technology and resources that they had access to.  It was obvious that the students knew that the teachers cared and wanted them to be successful.  It was also obvious the outstanding teachers that work at South Warren. I only wish the students and teachers had access to more.  They deserve it!

Education Induction Ceremony- NC Wesleyan College

Also on April 15 (It was a very busy day!), I traveled to the NC Wesleyan College to speak at their Education Induction Ceremony.  I was excited to be able to speak to the future teachers because I remember vividly when I was accepted into the College of Education at ASU.  As soon as I was accepted I went back to my dorm and wrote a letter to one of my favorite teachers Mr. Dodd Crowe.  In the letter I thanked him for being a great teacher and for everything he did for all of his students.

In my speak to the future teachers at NC Wesleyan College I shared this story.  I then challenged all of the students to write their influential teachers.  I explained to them that I didn't understand the great power behind a letter until I became a teacher.  Now I would love to receive a letter from past students!

Below are pictures from the night!

Lindly Park

On the afternoon of April 15,  I traveled to Asheboro City Schools and visited Lindly Park Elementary School.  I was so excited to visit this school and to visit an old friend!  Sheena Wisnasky is a 4th grade teacher at Lindly Park.  I met Sheena this past summer at an NCCAT seminar at Ocracoke.  We have talked many times since NCCAT, but I was only able to see her once this year.  So, I was really excited to visit!

When I first arrived the 4th graders were at lunch so I sat with them at the lunchroom table.  (This is when I realized I think this is the first time I have sat at a lunchroom table this year!  Crazy how this year has been!)  After lunch I participated in read-a-loud with the 4th grade students and then was able to help the students with their research projects (using laptops) on the Wright Brothers.  It was really neat to help the students with this because just the day before I ran a half marathon at Kitty Hawk and ran around the Wright Brothers memorial.  I shared this with the students and they thought it was really neat!

After school, Sheena gave me a tour of the school and I had the opportunity to meet the rest of the amazing teachers.  I had such a wonderful time!

Stony Point Elementary School

I traveled to Alexander County to Stony Point Elementary School on April 15th.  When talking to the principal, Mr. Charles DelForge, we realized that this year I have traveled to 90% of the schools that he has worked at.  The crazy thing about this is that it is literally from the coast to the mountains!  Small world or busy year... or both!

Mr. Delforge gave me a tour of the school and then gave me an opportunity to share and work with small groups of teachers.  I had a wonderful time working with the small groups.  I shared how I implement Student Date Notebooks into my every day lessons and how I analyze the data.  I then learned and gained ideas on how the teachers at Stony Point use data.

I had a wonderful time visiting!  Thank you again for having me!

1st Annual District TOY Summit

On Friday, April 12 teachers of the year in NC made history.  On this day we had our 1st Annual District Teacher of the Year Summit in Raleigh.  This idea came 3 weeks before after many of the teachers met to talk with the General Assembly.  We came up with this idea, asked Dr. Atkinson, and 3 weeks later here were are with the Summit! I worked with Tyronna and Sid for 3 very busy weeks in order to make sure everything was set.

The morning of the Summit I was very nervous!  I was nervous that something was going to go wrong and that we would have all of the best teachers in the state here to see this idea crumble to the ground.  Luckily this worry only lasted a couple of minutes because as soon as the teachers started coming in the room filled with energy and my worry turned to excitement.

We started the morning with an introduction from Dr. Atkinson, short speech on reflection from me, an amazing speech from Tyronna, and then a short presentation on Standard 6 and MSLs by DPI.  After this morning session we broke up into our break out sessions.  We had 2 rounds of break out sessions and then it was time for lunch.  Cindi Rigsbee was our keynote for lunch and did an excellent job!  She had everyone crying one minute and laughing hysterically the next.  It was exactly what we needed.

After lunch we had our final break out session and then our ending session with door prizes!  The day overall was a huge success!  It was amazing to have that much knowledge in the room!  Once finished we had teachers come and tell us that it was the best professional development that they have ever had.  We ended up having 140 teachers (last year and this years district toys) which is a huge number considering we put it together in 3 weeks.

Thank you everyone for making this day successful!  Also thank you Sid for all of your help!  It would not have been possible without you!  I can't wait until the 2nd Annual TOY Summit next year!

Delta Kappa Gamma- Watauga Chapter

After a very busy day spending time in schools located in the western end of the state, I came back to Watauga to speak at the Delta Kappa Gamma meeting.  As soon as I sat down with the preservice teachers, current teachers, and retired teachers I was automatically re-energized! Everyone seemed to have so much energy and excitement about teaching!  I had a wonderful time speaking with all of the teachers about my year as NC Teacher of the Year.

Thank you again for asking me to speak with you!  I had a wonderful time!

Greenlee Primary School

On the afternoon of April 11, I traveled to Mitchell County and visited Greenlee Primary School.  As soon as I walked in the door I was excited to be there!  I saw students with smiling faces who were excited to be at school!  Once I walked in I was introduced the Mr. Alan English the principal and Mitchell County's Superintendent.  After briefly talking to the Superintendent I realized that he grew up in Tennesee very close to Maryville (where I grew up) in Madisonville (which is where my Grandfather taught).  I felt at home already!

Mr. English proceeded to give me a tour of the school and introduce to me to outstanding teachers.  I was very impressed with the school!  I then had the opportunity to spend some time in the computer lab with the technology teacher (who is the Superintendent's wife).  I loved having the opportunity to talk with her and learn from her.

Thank you so much for allowing me to visit and for what you do for students each and every day!

Old Fort Elementary

On April 11, I traveled farther west to McDowell County.  There I visited Old Fort Elementary School.  I had passed by the road that Old Fort Elementary is located on many times while traveling to Asheville, however I had never visited the school before.  I was excited for this chance!  While there the teacher leader gave me a tour of the school.  I met many amazing teachers and very smart students!  The teacher leader showed me their data room that was complete with data wall, notebooks, lesson ideas, and computers.  She explained to me that this is where the teachers hold grade level and vertical alignment meetings.  I am sure this works well because everything that is needed is already in the room!

I had a wonderful time!  Thank you for allowing me to visit!

Pumpkin Primary

On April 9, I visited Pumpkin Primary which is located in Lincoln County.  I was very excited to visit this school because it is a school within a school.  Pumpkin Primary (K-2) is in the same building as the intermediate school (3-5).  When I first arrived I had lunch with the principal Mrs. Anita Robinson.  She told me all about her school and the wonderful teachers that she has.  She then let me help her as she went around the school and handed out the Kindergarten attendance awards.  The students were so excited to choose their attendance pencils!

After the attendance awards, Mrs. Robinson gave me a tour of the rest of the school.  We went through first grade and second grade.  As we came to the last classroom something happened that now happens more often then not.  I walked into the classroom and looked at the teacher and realized that I know her!  It was Malory!  I went to Summer Preview at Appalachian State with her!  I was so excited to see her and to see that she is teaching!  I know her students benefit greatly from having her!
